Did you think I forgot about you?
I could never! No, this newsletter issue is simply arriving late to mimic the tradition of the Christmas Eve Midnight Mass. Yup, that’s what I’m going with.
Yes, it’s true. It’s Christmas eve. I’ve only got one more advent surprise for you after today, so I wanted to make these last two extra special. Today is dedicated to someone I’ve loved for a very long time: the irreplaceable Ms. Eartha Kitt, the original queen of Christmas.
Where to even start with Ms. Kitt. A full expression of my love for her would take more time than I have in this newsletter, and frankly, this life. And just for the record, my favorite thing about her isn’t even the famed threesome she had with James Dean and Paul Newman even though that is a distillation of everything I believe in and stand for. So since I can’t even figure out where to start, I’ll just end with the song for which the world knows Ms. Kitt best.
For tonight’s Midnight Mass, watch Eartha Kitt slink along to “Santa Baby” and get yourself in the Christmas mood. Go ahead and chase that with her lesser known Christmas hit, “Nothin’ for Christmas.”
(But if Christmas isn’t your mood and you just want to watch Eartha sing other songs about separating men from their money, her performances of “Old Fashioned Girl” and “Monotonous” are ones I return to often).
