Saturdays are for…
Making oat milk matcha lattes? Catching up on Instagram? Getting your heart shredded to pieces by an unflinching portrait of marital infidelity? Yeah, sure, let’s go with that last one!
Nothing makes me feel more ~Arts & Culture~ than recommending something that is “New Wave.” But when that wave is New and Romanian? Nothing can stop me. I’m the artiest girl with the most obscure taste in all of New York City!
So let’s step into the raw, harsh, hyper-realistic world of Romanian New Wave with a film that is so barely Christmas: Radu Muntean’s Tuesday, After Christmas (Marţi, după Crăciun).
The story itself is nothing groundbreaking—a middle-aged married man cheats on his brunette wife with a younger blonde. But Muntean’s lens is so relentless, so unwilling to cut away from the most intimate, uncomfortable, and painful moments, that you’ll be like, “okay, why do I feel like my marriage is falling apart?”
You can stream Tuesday, After Christmas on Criterion Channel, Kanopy, OR rent it on MUBI. What I really want is for all of us to go watch this in a movie theater and then talk about it over drinks after. I’d order a thing with tequila and then project my own feelings/experiences onto the film and call it “critique.” It would be awesome.
