I skipped the coffee this morning…
And had some lemon-ginger tea instead so I’m feeling ORGANIC and CLASSY! So join me, my fellow sophisticates, in swaying to the smooth and stirring sounds of Francis Bebey.
Though the musician/writer departed our physical world in 2001, he left us with a wealth of music that celebrates the traditional instrumentations of his native Cameroon. The guitar, the mbira, and the pygmy flute are his instruments of choice, his own voice often lending its own rhythmic pulse to the composition.
In this one exceedingly charming clip, he discusses the call-and-response nature of his music and the indigenous musicians he’s inspired by. It’s a quality found in a lot of his music—each song is its own living, breathing, dynamic organism.
His album Psychedelic Sanza (1982-1984) is choc-full of these musical conversations. Begin with Sanza tristesse and Binta madiallo, or just make your way straight through the whole album. There is no wrong way to listen!
